ASAJAYA: Generasi muda mesti diberi bimbingan yang mampu membantu mereka memperhebatkan lagi pencapaian yang sedia ada.

Menteri Muda Pembangunan Belia (Bandar) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah berkata sekiranya generasi muda tidak berada di landasan yang betul, maka masa hadapan negeri dan negara tidak menjanjikan sesuatu yang membanggakan.

Kegembiraan penerima hadiah utama cabutan bertuah 

"Kita perlu sedar bahawa mereka inilah yang akan membentuk barisan kepimpinan di masa hadapan.

Mereka akan mewarisi apa jua yang sedia ada pada masa kini."

Atas sebab itu, "kita mesti menanam dalam jiwa anak-anak muda" dengan semangat-semangat seperti "semangat ketabahan, patriotisme dan mahu melihat masyarakat dan negera berjaya."

Abdul Karim berkata demikian ketika merasmikan majlis penangguhan dan penyampaian hadiah Karnival Transformasi Belia 2015, yang bertemakan "Belia Tonggak Transformasi Negara", anjuran Kementerian Pembangunan Sosial di Komplek Sukan Asajaya semalam.

Beliau seterusnya menyeru barisan kepimpinan masyarakat agar berusaha mendekati generasi muda bagi membantu mereka (generasi muda) mendapatkan latihan ataupun pendidikan yang sesuai yang mampu menyediakan mereka untuk mengambil alih tampuk kepimpinan dimasa hadapan.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Barisan Nasional government always have a big interest in the education of the state populace.

Assistany Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said education played an important role in churning out quality human capital which would later be used to further develop the state and country.

Abdul Karim added it was due to this that the government wanted all to receive education regardless whether they were in urban or rural areas.

The assistant minister said this when delivering his speech during a ceremony of giving excellent awards to SK Kampung Baru students at a Kampung Baru community hall here today.

He also urged parent and teacher associations (PTAs) to be pro-active in performing its role as a bridge between schools and communities.

The assistant minister said a constant communication between PTAs and school administrations was very important because it could help the former to be aware of any problems plaguing the schools and subsequently take the necessary actions to address the problems.

On the school's UPSR result this year, Abdul Karim congratulated the school for having an improvement.

Chinese community has contributed a lot in Asajaya

ASAJAYA: The Chinese community has contributed a lot to the development in the district as well as other surrounding areas.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the development was not only confined to economy but also include education.

He said this when delivering his speech during a prize- and certificates-giving ceremony at SJK Chung Hua Asajaya last night.

Touching on education, Abdul Karim said it was a well-known fact that the Chinese community had always placed great importance on knowledge acquired from a learning institution.

He added the establishment of SJK Chung Hua in Asajaya more than 80 years ago was a clear example of the enthusiasm which the Chinese community had in education.

Abdul Karim subsequently praised the community for accepting other races into the school when the government schools were yet established in the area.

The assistant minister added while the tolerant attitude was actually common in Sarawak, it  should be further fortified as to ensure that peace and harmony will always prevail in the state.

Sarawak BN leaders question PBS’ motive in spreading wings beyond its shores

SIBU: Sarawakians are in the good hand of state-based parties under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, hence there is no need for outside party/s to provide ‘advice’.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said yesterday Sarawakians are standing solidly behind Adenan’s leadership.

Dr Rundi was asked to comment on the media report of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), with the green light from the Registrar of Societies (ROS), spreading its wings to Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

PBS president Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan in his speech at the party’s delegates conference had requested that PBS’ application to expand to the peninsula and Sarawak be looked into.

“Whatever their (PBS) reasons are, this is a democratic country and they are free to decide as they deem fit, subject to ROS approval.

“But as far as Sarawak and Sarawakians are concerned – we are confident that we are in the good hand of Sarawak-based parties and we trust the leadership of our YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan and will stand steadfastly behind him.

“And I don’t think we need any party/s outside Sarawak to tell us what is best for us and what to do for the better future for Sarawakians,” Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), told The Borneo Post.

Karim: Thumb-up to SRS

ASAJAYA: Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah urged Department of National Unity and Integrity to adopt a holistic approach as to further fortify its Voluntary Patrolling Scheme (SRS).

He said the department could take advantage of the information technology in the undertaking.

Abdul Karim also praised the department for taking the initiative to implement the voluntary scheme in DUN Asajaya.

"This programme is interesting and useful ... and it gives many benefits to us," he said when delivering his speech at Jom Ronda Programme at Kampung Sampun Tebun last night.

Meanwhile the department state director Dirwana Azool said currently there were 472 areas have the scheme in the state.

Need to nurture spirit of nationalism, patriotism

KUCHING: Programmes to nurture the spirit of nationalism and patriotism in people should be on the calendar of government agencies every year.

In pointing this out, Assistant Minister of Youth (Urban) Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said efforts must be intensified in urban areas that lacked this spirit each time the National Day came around.

“From what we can see, it’s always the rural areas which are active in celebrating National Day.”

Abdul Karim was speaking at a prize-giving for the National Day ‘Bulan Keceriaan’ event at Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Thursday night.

According to him, the government welcomes efforts to promote the National Day mood such as fly the Jalur Gemilang, and programmes to promote the patriotism spirit among the people.

“We should support the effort as the patriotism spirit is weak, especially in urban areas. People need to realise that they should show love for the nation,” he said.

Limbang District Education Office was champion in the Government Building category while Pusat Internet 1Malaysia Niah won for the Private Sector Building category.

Karim: No need to segregate trolleys

KUCHING: Malaysia will be the first country in the world to segregate halal trolleys and non-halal trolleys if the system really becomes a reality, said Assistant Minister for Youth Development (Urban) and Assistant Minister for Housing, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Karim said he personally did not see the need to segregate trolleys in supermarkets. 

“I have never heard of halal and non-halal trolleys and maybe Malaysia might be the first country in the world to introduce this system if it really becomes a reality,” he added.

“Personally, I don’t see the need for this segregation of trolleys. Halal and non-halal food and meat are already being segregated in supermarkets.

“Non-halal meat is already properly packed in plastic. 

“So there is no issue here unless someone wants to make it into one,” Karim added. 

Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister, Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin was reported recently to have said that his Ministry was considering imposing new laws to segregate trolleys at supermarkets nationwide and proposed using trolleys of different colours, such as red for non-halal products.

SIBU: The teaching fraternity should be allowed to decide on what is best for the children, says Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Politicians from both the government and opposition including ministers who portray extreme and racist views should stay out of the fray. How could we condemn and pre-judge someone just because he is an Uztaz, a Malay or a West Malaysian as being incompetent to teach our children?

“Let this extreme, racist and unbecoming outlook be erased from all Sarawakians and we give respect to the teaching profession for their untireless effort to teach our children. Look at the case in depth.

“This principal is not someone who is thrown into the wilderness of Sarawak from nowhere. He has served in Sarawak for umpteen years and not just brought in yesterday. He knows the Sarawak diverse culture and multi-religious tolerance and it’s wrong to crucify him just for our political gain. Give him a chance to prove himself,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Adding on, the assistant minister said just because the person is a west Malaysian, does not mean he is less sensitive or lacks knowledge of local culture.

Condemning him as not being able to assimilate himself in community events is prejudging him even before he even commences his work, he opined.

“It is just unfortunate that after so many years of being Malaysian, we still have this mentality around and unfortunately even among those who sit in the chair of power.

Abdul Karim: Parents must have nerves of steel

ASAJAYA: Parents must not lose hopes to see their children to excel in education.

Assistant Minister to Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said some parents ignored their children when they felt that they no longer able to handle their children's behaviours resulting from the process of growing up.

Abdul Karim told the parents that it was a pity when they decided to do it because years before that they were beaming with hopes that their children would be successful in their education.

"Parents will normally happy when they see their children manage to get higher education.

"However, parents must have high commitments if they want their children to succeed (in education)," he said when delivering his speech during DUN N14 Asajaya KEMAS Kindergarten's Mini Convocation today.

The assistant minister also urged the parents not to look at their current situations as immovable obstacles to their children's success.

He pointed out that to have challenges were normal in life.

Abd Karim: Keep extremism at bay

SIBU: Extreme religious or racial views need to be kept out of Sarawak where harmony prevails.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this was because sensitive issues could stir racial and religious discontent.

“Religion has never been an issue in Sarawak and just do not start it…

“We have seen many religious bigots from Semenanjung. We hope we don’t have religious bigots from Sarawak too,” he added.

Hence, he said it was alarming and sad to see some people trying to champion and raise issues which could arouse anger like objecting to the appointment of a principal in SMK Sungai Paoh just because he was an Uztaz.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, said it had never been an issue on who should be principals, headmasters or teachers in Sarawak.

“We have been able to live with tolerance, understanding and respect with each other and this has also been the case with the schools.

Practice makes perfect

ASAJAYA: Practice makes perfect.

That was the message hammered down by Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when he was delivering his speech when officiating the 2015 edition of 9-aside Football Championships “Jom Main Bola Tambirat” at Kampung Tambirat yesterday.

The championships were organised by Kampung Tambirat Youth Club.

He said in order to form a good sporting team, the players had to be exposed to sufficient number of games as to help them to acquire the necessary level of maturity in their game.

Touching on a sporting facility in the village, Abdul Karim said in addition to the football pitch, Kampung Tambirat had two futsal pitches.

He subsequently announced that he would make an initiative to repair the football pitch which was currently not in a good condition.

‘Don’t be alarmed over Unimas-UEC issue’

SIBU: Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is calling for calm amidst the dissatisfaction that arises following the announcement by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) that it will not recognise Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) as among its entry qualifications.

He assured all that there would be a positive outcome later but it would take time and discussions for the matter which was under federal jurisdiction.

“Do not be alarmed. The state government and our Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem) had only announced the state’s recognition of UEC.

“(However) education education matters and policies are decided by Putrajaya. As such, Unimas being a public university is guided by the Higher Institution Ministry when it comes to enrolment.

“I believe adjustments would be made pursuant to our state government’s recognition of UEC — if not for all public universities (in Malaysia), it could be for public universities in Sarawak.

“This would take a little bit of time and discussion,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

Abdul Karim added that if the discussions were held between the state and federal governments, with both being held by Barisan Nasional (BN), the possibility of it (recognition of UEC by public universities) coming to a ‘happy ending’ would be much higher.

SIBU: Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah fully supports Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s strong stand on Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and English as a medium of instruction.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, said the UEC issues had been lingering for too long and it was puzzling why the Education Ministry continued to withhold recognition of the certificate when it was recognised worldwide.

“There’s a high possibility that it’s not recognised because the parties lobbying for its recognition then are opposition leaning and Chinese based parties in BN are equally to be blamed for not being outspoken enough.

“As what has been correctly mentioned by the Chief Minister, the non-recognition by the government will lead to those having this certificate “moving” out of Malaysia and creating “brain drain” which eventually will be a loss to the country,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Adenan had said he could not understand why the federal government refused to recognise UEC when private universities in many countries recognised this certificate by students from Chinese Independent Schools.

Adenan said this at Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC)’s Integrity Day 2015 in Kuching on Wednesday.

On the English Language, he said it was an international language of science and technology, literature, and communications.

KUCHING: Assistant Minister for Youth Development (Urban Areas) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has commended Chinese schools as manifestation of a truly unique Malaysian society where Malays and Dayaks children study alongside the Chinese in a show of harmony.

“Chinese schools were established even before World War II and have provided valuable opportunities of education for the people including many non-Chinese in both remote areas and towns.

“It is good to see many Malays and Dayaks studying side by side in Chinese schools under the same roof. It shows the uniqueness of the Malaysian society where people of diverse cultures meet and propagate unity and harmony,” he said at the Confucius’ birthday celebration jointly organised by 19 schools at SJK Chung Hua Tambira last Saturday night.

At the function he pledged RM30,000 for 19 aided Chinese primary schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian divisions.

Abdul Karim, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing said the occasion reflected the top priority the Chinese community placed on education and the respect for knowledge and the teachers.

Abdul Karim also paid tribute to Confucius whose teachings he pointed out were still very relevant despite being passed down almost 3,000 years ago.

“He is the paramount teacher who still influences the ways of thinking of many people today especially the Chinese all over the world.”

Curtail gambling habit, urges Karim

SIBU: Any games of chance that can lure people into picking up gambling habits should be curtailed, says Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, stressed that prompt action needs to be taken to prevent especially the youths from getting ‘hooked’ on the bad habit.

He said this yesterday when asked on concerns by members of public on certain centres hosting the ‘Fishing Game’ which was said to be a form of gambling reported in the media recently.

“Yes…it is not just the public who are concerned but the government and political leaders from both BN and the opposition are concerned with the ‘sprouting’ of cyber gambling centres offering various types of wager… whether it’s “Fishing games”, “Monkey games” or even “one arm bandit”.

“Any game of chance or any form of gambling which could entice youths or public picking up gambling habits should be curtailed.

“We have seen many of these centres mushrooming and we do admit the authorities are doing many raids to check on this.

“We hope the police and councils can beef up their efforts to eradicate these gambling premises instead of sweeping it under the carpet and/or telling off Wakil Rakyat who raised this matter up as if they have “lost touch with the ground”,” Abdul Karim told the sundaypost.
