Identify and nurture children’s talents, parents told

May 24, 2017

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Parents should help identify and nurture their children’s talent if they are weak in their academic performance.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said there were children who are not good in academic studies but have natural talents and skills.

He said parents who happen to come across children like this should not be afraid to develop their talents.

“Their talents, if properly nurtured can be developed into skills. There are various kinds of talents and skills. Some children have the talent for sports, some have the talent for arts, some have the talent for woodworking and manufacturing.

“So try to identify their talents and give encouragement to them to pursue their talent,” he said at the handing over of Yayasan Sarawak education aid at the civic centre here yesterday.

Abdul Karim said parents need to understand that some children were not so good in academic studies.

This, he noted, did not mean that they do not have a bright future or that they will have problems seeking jobs upon finishing their studies.

He said there were skill training institutions in Sarawak today, which were set up either by the government or private sector.

“These institutions offer various kinds of skill and technical training to your children and the youth at large.

“At these centres, your children can take up, for example, welding, oil and gas-based training such as scaffolding and rigging, slinging, tailoring and others.

“If your children are interested in arts and culture, we also have the Sekolah Seni available here,” he said, adding that because of these factors, there was no reason for the children not to succeed in their life.

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, said the state government would always provide opportunities for the youth to nurture their talents and skills.

“If your children’s academic (performance) is not satisfactory, try to encourage them to explore the skill and technical fields,” he said. -TheBorneoPost
