Ministry proposes study on Youth Index in the state

KUCHING: A study on the Sarawak’s Youth Index will be proposed to measure the quality and well-being of youths in the state.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed study would be in collaboration with the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES).

“The index will cover 12 domains comprising self-development, education, potential, economic well-being, media usage and political socialisation and 58 indicators.

“The Youth Index will be used as input for the formulation of youth development policy in Sarawak,” he said in his winding up speech yesterday.

Abdul Karim informed the august House that Sarawak aim to be the champion of 19th Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) to be held in Perak from Sept 12 to 22 next year.

He said 19 compulsory sports and 10 optional sports would be competed in Perak compared to 19 compulsory sports and five optional sports in Sukma 2016 hosted by Sarawak.

“The target for the Sarawak contingent is to be the champion of 19th Sukma Perak.

“To achieve the target, preparations for Sarawak athletes are currently being carried out according to plan.

“The Sarawak Sports Corporation has been tasked to handle all these various high performance sports agenda and with the support from all sectors, I am sure we can make it happen,” he added.

Abdul Karim said the Sukan Sarawak (SukSar), which will be held again in December after 26 years, would take place once every two years.

“It is our hope that the revival of SukSar would revitalise and further boost our quest to become Sukma champion once again in 2018.”

The last time Sarawak emerged overall champion in Sukma was in 1994.

He said SukSar, scheduled to take place at the Sarawak Sports Complex, Petra Jaya would serve as a platform for athletes to compete with the best athletes from all divisions throughout Sarawak.

According to Abdul Karim, the upcoming four-day sport event from Dec 14 is open to all athletes aged under 19 from all the 12 divisions.

He added that 14 sports would be competed for normal athletes and four sports for special athletes.

“These athletes are basically those who have the potential to represent Sarawak in the coming 19th Sukma and 19th Malaysian Paralympiad Games to be held in Ipoh, Perak next year.” -TheBorneoPost
