No travel ban for Sarawakians visiting UK — Abdul Karim

June 6, 2017

SIBU: The state will not ban Sarawakians from travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) despite a series of terrorist attacks in the country.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawak has full confidence in the UK’s security and would not ban Sarawakians from traveling to the country.

“This is what these terrorists want and they would be very happy if we start to avoid the UK as our destination. For us to avoid travelling there would be a victory of sorts to them.

“We have full confidence in the UK’s security service in addressing these terrorists,” Abdul Karim told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Seven people died and 48 were injured, with 21 still in critical condition, in the most recent terrorist attack that took place in London on Saturday night.

One Canadian and one Frenchman were among the fatalities.

According to media reports, a white van swerved and hit several pedestrians on the London Bridge.

Three men then exited the vehicle and went on a stabbing spree at Borough Market.

The police arrived within eight minutes and shot dead all three suspects at the scene.

The Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The attack was the third terrorist incident in the UK since March.

Abdul Karim also expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Central Region Hotel Association chairman Johnny Wong when contacted said there are only two tour agencies in Sibu which organise tours to Europe.

“Presently, there are no tours heading to the UK. The nearest tour is in July and come September, there will be more. Even for these tours, they are mainly European tours and not just specifically the UK.

“Since July and September are still far off, it is hard to say now if terrorist attacks in the UK would have an impact on the people of Sibu visiting the UK,” said Wong. -TheBorneoPost
